David Letterman Makes Amends to Bill Hicks

A 1993 stand-up performance by the late Bill Hicks, who died of pancreatic cancer in 1994, that was cut from the the telecast 15 years ago was showed to the audience during an episode of the „Late Show with David Letterman” on Friday.

Moreover, in his attempt to make amends both to Bill Hicks and maybe his own rife with guilt conscience, David Letterman also invited Hicks’ mother on the show to apologize for having cut her son’s entire performance only months before the man had passed away.

Mary Hicks accepted the talk-show host’s apology and expressed her appreciation of his gesture.

Back in 1993, Hicks’ cut performance made for the first incident of the like for Letterman’s late night talk show and gave rise to much controversy, also having prompted Hicks to write a 39-page letter to John Lahr in the New Yorker.

Friday, Letterman acknowledged the fact that his decision to cut the performance had caused Hicks’ family sorrow and pain, since they were the only ones who knew the man had only a few months left to live.

Hicks’ performance was filled with spot-on remarks, at times challenging and twisted, as Letterman described them, about textbooks promoting gay lifestyles, right to life advocates and an opening part during which he said that he was going to do a show called „Let's Hunt and Kill Billy Ray Cyrus.”

Coincidentally, his piece was broadcast just after a commercial announcing Friday’s episode of Craig Ferguson show, during which Miley Cyrus was to be the focus of the talks.
