Longtime couple David Duchovny and Tea Leoni put on a united
front this summer as the “X-Files” actor announced he was voluntarily entering
a facility to treat sex addiction but now the couple says they have in fact
been separated “for several months.”
I hate to say it but it did seem too good to be true. In
late August, David Duchovny made one shocking confession that rocked the media:
he was entering a rehabilitation center for sex addiction, voluntarily he
specified, and wished that the media respected his privacy and that of his
family.
No further comments were made.
In early October, the actor’s lawyer, Stanton Stein,
announced that his client had checked out of the rehab facility after having
“successfully completed his treatment.” In the following weeks, Duchovny and
wife Tea Leoni were photographed around New
York, looking friendly and cozy together. There was a
whimsical quality to that, how the spouses had overcome such a bad time
together, in unity. Now we learn they were no longer a couple.
The two actors married in May 1997 and have two children
together: 9-year-old daughter Madelaine West and 6-year-old son Kyd Miller. It
is the first marriage for Duchovny, 48, and the second for Leoni.
People magazine reported Wednesday on its website that the
couple has split. A statement said the “continuous speculation” over their
lives and the state of their marriage had determined the spouses to clarify
things and confirm that they have “in fact” been separated “for several
months.”
They explained that the reason they had kept this matter
private was for “the sake of their children.”
Duchovny has been rumored to suffer from sex addiction before,
over the years, but both he and Leoni consistently denied such rumors in
interviews, usually adopting a humorous approach to the subject.
Their recent statement did not disclose the reason of their
separation.
Duchovny currently stars in television series
“Californication,” portraying Hank Moody, a philandering novelist struggling
with writer’s block. In January, he received a Golden Globe Award as best actor
in a comedy for his role.
His previous Golden Globe Award, received in 1996, was for
best actor in a drama, for his longtime role in cult television series “The
X-Files,” where he portrayed unconventional FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder.
Duchovny has also starred in two feature films based on the
series, the second released this summer to mixed critical reviews and a
disappointing box office.
His lawyer said earlier this month, upon announcing his
successful recovery from sex addiction, that he was working on a new movie but
did not specify the project.
Leoni currently stars in the David Koepp-directed comedy
“Ghost Town,” released last month.
