Director David Dobkin has signed on to helm the upcoming Warner Bros. superhero film “The Flash,” replacing Shawn Levy.
MTV.com reports exclusively that the man behind 2003’s “Shanghai Knights,” starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, and 2005’s “Wedding Crashers,” featuring Own Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Christopher Walken and Rachel McAdams, will direct “The Flash.”
MTV notes that DC Comics superhero the Flash will also appear in the upcoming “Justice League of America” film, a project not much has been revealed about so far, except rumors that Jessica Biel could be cast as Wonder Woman.
Dobkin was confident however when asked by MTV which version of the Flash would be the hero of his film. “Wally West,” he said, thus naming the third Flash after Jay Garrick and Barry Allen.
The director also confirmed that his movie will “exist in the same universe as the upcoming flick as a direct spin-off,” MTV reports. He also revealed a tagline for the pic: “You can't outrun yourself.”
Shawn Levy was the previous director attached to the project but he has left for undisclosed reasons. He also has comedies to his credit, among them “Cheaper by the Dozen,” “The Pink Panther,” and “Night at the Museum.”
Dobkin told MTV that the comedic background directors linked to the Flash movie have does not mean that the character will be treated in a light manner.
Dobkin is currently working on “Fred Claus,” a holiday comedy slated for a Nov. 9 release. It stars Vince Vaughn and Paul Giamatti and is produced and directed by David Dobkin.
Warner Bros’ “Justice League of America” will feature a plethora of superheroes, among which Superman, Batman, the Flash, Wonder Woman and Aquaman are expected to appear. George Miller has reportedly already signed to direct the pic, while Kieran and Michele Mulroney have penned the script. Christian Bale and Brandon Routh, who have portrayed Batman and Superman, respectively, in separate flicks, are not expected to join the production.
