David Cook's Uncredited and Credited Covers on Idol

While Chris Cornell has declared he is flattered that American Idol contestant David Cook did his cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" last week on the show, a rock-soul group out of Seattle named Doxology says that Cook sang their cover of "Eleanor Rigby" two weeks ago without giving them any credit.

Let's look at both issues chronologically. On American Idol’s March 11th episode, David Cook sang the Beatles classic "Eleanor Rigby" in a near carbon copy of the cover by Doxology, which has been available on the band's MySpace page and iTunes since January 2007, without giving the rock band any credit. Even after they released a press statement on Saturday, March 28, demanding recognition, nothing has happened.

"Our main issue is that when given the opportunity to speak up and reveal where the arrangement came from, David Cook did not. His silence on the issue implies that the arrangement is his own. It is not," says in the statement Doxology lead vocalist Luke McPherson.

The problem is also that Idol management posted David Cook's performance and studio recording on iTunes, allowing American Idol to profit from the David Cook, March 11th performance and studio recording, without crediting the source for the recording's arrangement, which in this case is allegedly Doxology.

This has happened before on American Idol. During Season 5, Chris Daughtry also used an arrangement from a band without crediting his source.

Coming back to the second issue, Chris Cornell said that he liked Cook's rendition of his arrangement. His cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" is a drastically stripped-down take on the song that appeared on his 2007 solo album "Carry On." Proper credit on the show sparked significant interest in the former Soundgarden frontman's solo music.

"At the end of the day, it's all good. It's a good thing for me. There was a moment when I was sitting there writing this new arrangement thinking, 'Is this a good idea or a bad idea?' Watching the response from the judges was really gratifying. They were signing off on it right there. It was something that worked. [...] When I play it live on tour, it brings the house down every time," Cornell said.

Tonight, the top nine contestants will perform on American Idol. Last week, Chikezie was eliminated from “American Idol” on Wednesday night. The night before, Chikezie Eze decided to follow his intuition and his voice coach and chose a ballad, even though the judges had advised him otherwise. He sang it well enough to be considered safe from being kicked out, but Cowell called it "cheesy," especially due to the fact that Chikezie hold out his hand to the waving chicks in the Mosh Pit.
