Another stunt, another record, another battle with unsatisfied critics for the famous illusionist, self entitled “endurance artist” David Blaine.
After he spent 7 days underwater, 44 days in a glass box with food, and 72 hours sheathed in ice, the magician decided to put his life at risk yet again in the attempt of spending 60 hours hanging upside down above the Wollmann ice rink in New York City.
Neglecting doctor’s concerns for his health and predictions of possible internal organs damage, stroke and blindness due to extended rush of blood to the head, Blaine decided to go on with his challenge, called “ Dive of Death,” Monday, Sept. 22, 2008. He hopes to stay up for 60 hours, after which he will plunge 44 feet to the ground in a spectacular finale transmitted live on ABC from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Wednesday night.
Unfortunately for Blaine, health is not his only concern, as more and more fans or nonbelievers are apparently unsatisfied with the magician’s stunt and they say it’s not so spectacular after all. Although Blaine said he would not be brought down and will spend all of the 60 hours hanging by his feet, curious folks passing by the Wollmann ice rink have spotted Blaine standing on a cherry-picker and helping himself with bottled water.
In pre-stunt interviews, Blaine said he would use a catheter to urinate and would restore blood flow with upside-down sit-ups and by moving his legs. Now, it turns out that he takes a 10-minute break every hour, for drinking, urinating and a quick medical consult, as he discovered the stunt is so much harder than he thought, his spokesman Pat Smith stated.
This seems to be a bit of a disturbing matter for those who come to witness a life-threading stunt and a hanging magician and only face a standing and unspectacular Blain drinking casually out of a bottle.
