United States illusionist and daredevil David Blaine has
started another endurance challenge, which consists in hanging upside down for
almost three days, above Wollman Rink in Manhattan's Central Park.
The stunt was kicked off Monday morning at 8:30 and is expected to end
at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, disregarding doctors’ worries about the damage the
stress might cause to Blaine’s internal organs and blood circulation.
”My mouth is dry and I have to go to the bathroom,” Blaine
said Monday afternoon. “I feel pressure in
my head, and my legs are tingling,” the magician added.
Despite being suspended from a four-storey high metal frame,
the illusionist can be lowered in order to speak to fans face to face. He can
also free one leg and use its weight to raise his head to a horizontal position.
During the two nights and three days of the challenge, David
Blaine will not be eating anything, will be given liquid through a straw and
passing water through a catheter. In addition, he won’t be able to sleep at all
since he must be awake all the time so as to move his legs and keep the blood
flowing.
Dr. Massimo Napolitano said that the risks the stunt
involves are really high, the performer actually putting his own life in
jeopardy.
"He has a 5 to 10% chance for blindness. He knows the
signs - blurred vision, persistent headaches, passing out, seizures. He knows
his body better than anyone else,” Napolitano stated.
Blaine’s past stunts include spending 72 hours encased in
ice, seven days underwater and 44 days spent without food in a glass box.
Nevetheless, he admitted that this one would be the most difficult of all so
far.
The reasons behind
this daredevil act consist of pushing his own limits and giving himself ”a
different perspective, for a short duration,” David Blaine informed. The
magician is expected to end his 60-hour challenge at the climax of a live ABC
special ”David Blaine: Dive of Death” on Wednesday.
