The soccer superstar player David Beckham was officially
unveiled as a player of the Los Angeles Galaxy. Wearing a dapper grey suit, Beckham smiled
widely as he sat on the podium to be greeted by thousands of fans and a mob of
cameramen.
The English star is expected to earn an estimated 250
million dollars over the course of his 5 year contract.
David Beckham, 32, will play his first match as Los Angeles
Galaxy player on Saturday, July 21 in a friendly against Chelsea FC at The Home
Depot Center
"In my career I have played with two of the biggest
club sides in the world - Manchester United (of the English Premiership) and
Real Madrid - and I played for 11 years for my country (England) and
still I am playing for my country. I have always looked for challenges in my
career and something exciting in my life," Beckham said during his speech in
front of media and 5,000 fans.
"I'm looking forward to starting training next week,
I'm looking forward to the first game, I'm looking forward to the support that
you have all shown me throughout my career, not just coming here to Los Angeles
but throughout my career," Beckham added.
The transfer of David Beckam is the most important move by a
US
soccer team since Pele player for the New York Cosmos in 1975.
But the biggest challenge for the former captain of the England
team is to change the way soccer is perceived in US and transform it into a
national mainstream. In US soccer trails basketball American football and other
sports in popularity, TV ratings and funding.
Maybe Beckham’s mission won’t be so hard, considering that the
arrival of the English player with his pop diva wife Victoria is a media boom
and his new club has sold already 250,000 team jerseys since his signing.
