Christian Bale, who was arrested in London on Tuesday, questioned by police and
released that same day, denies allegations made by his mother and sister that
he assaulted them.
Welsh actor Christian Bale was in London over the weekend for
the European premiere of “The Dark Knight” when something obviously went wrong
– since he is now being accused of having assaulted his own mother and sister
and has been arrested and questioned by police.
Christian Bale’s publicist said Tuesday that he had not been
charged with any crime, that he was cooperating with police and that he denied
all allegations.
British paper The Sun was first to report that two family
members of the actor’s, his mother and sister to be specific, went to a
Hampshire police station Monday to make their allegations formally. The case
was turned over to London
police.
The incident allegedly took place Sunday at Park Lane’s Dorchester Hotel when he allegedly “lashed
out” at the two women. He attended the European premiere of the film the
following day.
A statement Tuesday from Christian Bale’s publicists said he
attended a London
police station “on a voluntary basis, in order to assist with an allegation
that had been made against him to the police by his mother and sister.”
Details regarding the incident have so far been sparse. A
spokeswoman for London’s
Metropolitan Police said a 34-year-old man had been arrested in connection with
an allegation of assault but would not reveal his name.
Bale’s publicists however mentioned no arrest in their
statement, saying only that Bale, “who denies the allegation, cooperated
throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question and has left the
station without any charge being made against him by the police.”
A police spokesperson told People.com that Christian Bale
left the police station Tuesday afternoon, after four hours of talking with
authorities, with a 10-man police escort, in a blacked-out silver Mercedes
people carrier. The 34-year-old star is to return to police in September,
pending further inquiry.
As to the other two persons involved in the situation,
sister Sharon Bale and mother Jenny Bale, they have not revealed much despite
being contacted by multiple media outlets.
The Associated Press reports a woman believed to be
Christian Bale’s sister said “it’s a family matter” from her home in Corfe
Mullen, 110 miles southwest of London, while a man
who answered the door at the home of the actor’s mother in Bournemouth
said she did not want to comment.
While arrest is such a serious term in the U. S., in England a person is arrested before
being questioned in connection to a possible crime, which does suggest that
Christian Bale’s arrest may indeed be a “family situation,” as his mother told
British paper The Telegraph.
Bale meanwhile is scheduled to be in Barcelona on Thursday for the film’s Spanish-language
premiere. “The Dark Knight,” directed by Chris Nolan and
co-starring the late Heath Ledger as the Joker, took a record $158.4 million at
the box office in its opening weekend.
Christian Bale first donned the batsuit in 2005, in “Batman
Begins,” also directed by Chris Nolan. He will next appear as John Connor, in
“Terminator Salvation,” due out next year.
