Appearing naked onstage in the London production of "Equus" and kissing Katie Leung in the fifth Harry Potter movie turned out easier to perform due to the sex scene he filmed for indie production "December Boys."
Set in Australia during the 1960s, the coming-of-age drama based on Michael Noonan’s novel finds four orphan boys leave for a holiday on the South Australian coast where they end up competing to be adopted by a resident couple.
"It's about four boys who grow up in a Catholic orphanage in the outback of Australia and who are, due to a generous donation to the orphanage, all sent on holiday for their birthday month, which is December," Radcliffe said. "And they all have their various rites of passage while they are away."
One of the most talked scenes in "December Boys," which is released across the UK on September 14, is the love scene between Radcliffe’s character, Maps, the oldest of the boys, and an older girl he falls in love with, played by Theresa Palmer, 21.
Shooting the sex scene when Daniel was only 16 has made him focus better on Harry Potter’s first kiss scene in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," which made headlines before the flick was released.
"If I hadn't done that scene in December Boys I would have been more nervous about the kissing in Harry Potter. It was a big moment for Harry, an iconic moment and it's funny that more of a fuss was made over the kiss than the sex," he was quoted by the Daily Record as saying.
"When people asked about my 'first kiss' onscreen, I'd be like, 'No, I did that two years ago.' But if I hadn't done that scene in 'December Boys,' I would have been more nervous about the kissing in 'Harry Potter' five," he explained.
The "December Boys" scene though was far from easy or relaxed and was “broken up, with more interruptions, more time to get nervous,” Daniel said.
"We started filming at11am on December 23 and we finished at 4.15am on Christmas Eve. So it was a very long day and we filmed the sex scene at about eight o'clock that night so I wasn't too tired yet, luckily...
"But I was nervous. Definitely. Being the first love scene I'd ever done it was not exactly imposing, but you were aware and going: 'Oh, God, what do I do, what don't I do?'," he said, adding that his co-star "was very, very good at helping me to just chill out and just have a love for it - that's what it is about."
Earlier this year, Daniel chose to play the part of Alan Strang, a seemingly sane teenager with a strong passion for horses, in the London production of Peter Shaffer’s 1973 play, in which he had to strip down his clothes, but he said "Once you've been doing the play for two hours, you're so into the character, you're not even thinking about it."
Next week, Daniel is set to get back in his wizard’s shoes as filming for the sixth installment of the Potter saga will be starting.
"It's pretty whirlwind," he said. "I stop press on the 14th and start on the 17th. There's just one week of rehearsal. That's manic. But when you know the character as well as I do, it's easy to get back into the role. So the amount of prep you do, it's possible to do a lot of what you need on the day of. It comes very naturally now."
And no matter how tight his schedule is, Daniel says he’s never "too busy" for girls.
"People ask me, 'Are you too busy for all that?' But honestly, you're never too busy for all that!"
