Daniel Radcliffe finally made his long awaited Broadway debut in Equus, on Thursday night. Therefore almost everyone who makes a difference in the American theatre gathered at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre to watch he performance.
Peter Shaffer's psychological drama, Equus which is among the serious play hits of the '70s, also starred Richard Griffiths and had the same director as the previous London run of the production, Thea Sharrock. It tells the story of a stable boy who, in an inexplicable act of violence, blinds six horses with a metal spike. Regarding Sharrock, the Tony-winning star of The History Boys, he plays the psychiatrist, Dr. Martin Dysart. It goes without saying that Radcliffe is the protagonist of the play.
As far as Radcliffe’s acting is concerned, the 19 year old actor’s performance came in as a pleasant surprise. He not only managed to build a character which doesn’t really resemble Harry Potter, but he succeeded in convincing the audience of his beautiful development as a young adult who demonstrated to have some idea regarding real feelings and life experience.
"It was funny because tonight I didn't expect to be nervous because we've done all the previews, we've had all the critics here," Radcliffe told The Associated Press after Thursday's performance. "I thought, `Oh, we'll do it tonight, it won't be so bad.' But I was terrified before we went out. I was like, `Omigod, this is it.'"
Apart from his being praised, Variety also noted that back in London, Radcliffe had been criticized for a lack of vocal control but it seems that an extra year and a half of maturity may have helped. Moreover, his nude scenes proved he actually feels great in his own skin and his appearing like that didn’t lack motivation, whatsoever.
