Indeed a sovereign! Nothing seems to stand in Helen Mirren’s way as she conquers award after award after award….
This has been some glorious reaping (of a crop of awards!) from the brilliant seeds she sowed. Dame Helen Mirren was honored with the BAFTA award for best actress, for her portrayal of the British monarch in “The Queen.”
Dame Helen portrayed Queen Elizabeth II in the days after the death of her former daughter-in-law, Princess Diana. The drama also received the prize in the best film category.
This is Dame Helen’s first film BAFTA. She has received three TV BAFTAS throughout her career. The British actress has also been honored with a SAG award for outstanding female actor in a leading role, again for her royal role.
Her role as Elizabeth I in the HBO mini-series of the same name brought another SAG award, which deeply impressed the renowned actress. Another egg in the basket is last month’s Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.
Riding a wave of popularity, Helen Mirren has been named Best Actress by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the Boston Society of Film Critics, the New York Film Critics Circle, the San Francisco Critics Circle, the Washington D.C. Society of Film Critics and the National Board of Review - all for her role as Elizabeth II in “The Queen.”
This outstanding acting performance has brought Dame Helen Mirren her third Academy Award nomination, following previous nominations for her role in “The Madness of King George” in 1994 and for “Gosford Park” in 2001.
The acclaimed actress has said that playing Britain's two Queen Elizabeths in separate projects was extraordinary and helped her better understand the monarchy.
“It was a happy accident; extraordinary; absolutely amazing,” the veteran British film and television actress confessed in 2006. “I did 'Elizabeth I,' which was exhausting and very, very demanding, physically and mentally, and then I had two weeks off before I started on the second. So, it was quite an intense, queenly sort of period.”
