Legal thrillers definitely continue to interest us for their magical ability of sending shivers down our spines! The incredibly good “Damages” begins its second season Wednesday at 10 p.m. on FX, and it features Glenn Close’s comeback as lawyer Patty Hewes. Moreover all her intriguing and so very interesting partners will also be back on the screen: Rose Byrne as her revenge-minded protégé Ellen Parsons and Ted Danson as the devious wannabe, billionaire Arthur Frobisher.
Newly joining them is Oscar winner William Hurt, who teams with Close for the first time since their work in 1983's "The Big Chill." Also along for the dark thrill ride are Timothy Olyphant (the sheriff in "Deadwood") and Marcia Gay Harden.
Fans of the series know all too well that "Damages" is, in fact, both complicated and dense, sometimes confusing flashbacks and just about enough plot twists to give you brain warp. But this season, we also see a hint of vulnerability, not overplayed by Close, as she deals with sins of the past. As it happens, there are plenty of those.
We know that "Damages" spent its first season establishing Glenn Close's Patty Hewes as the biggest shark in the American legal sea, but things promise to take a fresh turn this time. In case you didn’t see the first season of “Damages,” all you need to know is that Patty is the kind of boss who would, in a time of great crisis, order a hit on one of her employees. You get the sense, in Season 2, that she regrets having done that, but wouldn’t refuse to repeat it if necessary.
This is an awfully good show mostly because of the complex humanity of each and every one of the characters in it, a well hidden one, but the sort that’s delicious to discover.
