Dalai Lama admitted to hospital with stomach pains

New Delhi - The Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, was taken to hospital in the Indian city of Mumbai with complaints of stomach pains, news reports and officials said Friday.

"There is nothing major to feel concerned about," his personal secretary Tenzin Taklha was quoted as saying by the Times of India newspaper.

"But he has been admitted to the hospital because he was feeling some discomfort in his abdomen."

The 73-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner had on Wednesday cancelled planned trips to Mexico and Dominican Republic saying he was suffering from exhaustion.

He had returned on Sunday to Dharamsala, the north Indian town where Tibet's self-proclaimed government-in-exile is based, after a two-week visit to France.

The Tibetan government-in-exile maintained Friday that the Dalai Lama was not unwell and had undergone some medical tests at the Lilavati Hospital.

"Doctors attending on him have given assurances that there is absolutely no cause for concern. All that he needs is a good rest," the Tibetan government said.

The statement added that the spiritual leader will participate in a 12-hour long fasting and prayer service to be observed by Tibetans and their supporters across the world on Saturday.
