DVD Jon - the hacker name of the Norwegian-born Jon Lech
Johansen - has claimed he has managed to activate Apple's iPhone without giving
any "money or personal information" to the phone maker's US network
partner AT&T.
"There are people who want an iPhone to use it as an
iPod and wi-fi device without having to enter into a two-year AT&T
contract," wrote Johansen on his blog.
According to Oslo
daily Dagbladet Johansen has posted the method on its website.
After activating the "brand new unactivated"
iPhone it "does not have phone capability, but the iPod and WiFi
work," he said.
Johansen is not as his first attempt to crack an Apple’s
products. Last October he claimed he managed to crack the digital protection on
Apple's iTunes.
As for iPhone, Johansen is not the only one who is trying to
override the protection.
According to PC World USA, by Tuesday night, U.S.
time, hackers succeeded also in cracking the iPhone's activation process.
"Activating the phone really just makes the device more
'usable' for those who want to use it as a Wi-Fi device, for instance," said
one of the hackers in an interview with PC World.
