DVD Blocks Bullet, Saves Man’s Life

Barry McRoy, a Colleton County fire and rescue director, is a very lucky guy.

As the fire chief left a Waffle House restaurant in Walterboro, two men were fighting over a weapon. The gun fired and the bullet ricocheted into McRoy, the police report said.

So far the fire chief was the unluckiest man alive and the term alive seems at least out of place. However, as the police report shows, the bullet that hit McRoy struck him right in the area where he had a DVD – one of his pockets.

Mcroy realized that he had been shot only after he saw the bullet hole in his jacket. He then looked into his pocket and found out that the bullet had shattered the DVD case. The DVD was a recorded TV show about fire extinguishers.

His stomach was hurting, but he thought this was caused by the percussion going off in the little space inside the restaurant. He then searched in his pocked and “fished the bullet out” as he said in an interview with the  WCSC-TV.

The police investigators dealing with this particular case have a different version of the story. They said the bullet was ricocheting when it hit McRoy.

"I was saved by a DVD. How lucky can you get?" McRoy said.

Well, maybe if he’d play the lottery in the near future, the fire and rescue director from Walterboro might find out.
