The massive interest shown in the presidential campaign took
more than one route, as several reports were filed about the hacks on the two
candidates’ computer systems. Obama’s and McCain’s computers were the victims
of some carefully planned cyber-attacks carried on by an unknown "foreign
entity," according to the explanation given by the FBI and the Secret
Service.
"You have a problem way bigger than what you
understand," explained one of the agents talking to Obama's team.
"You have been compromised, and a serious amount of files have been loaded
off your system." He also added that a similar situation was reported in
McCain’s camp.
At this point there is no information on who is responsible
for the attacks but the main focus of the intrusion was the access to some
documents presenting the candidates’ policy proposals. The data might be used
for negotiating with the future administration.
Outside consultants have been called in to make sure that
there will be no other security flaws and with the help of the FBI, the matter
should be soon taken care of. For now, the speculations point out to some
Chinese and Russian hackers.
This is not the first time that Internet attacks target the
people involved in the presidential campaign, as a few months ago Sarah Palin’s
personal Yahoo e-mail account was hacked in an attempt to find incriminating
details about the vice presidential candidate. Also, last month, McCain’s
campaign office released a statement announcing that a laptop with strategic
information was stolen from its headquarters.
