A curfew was imposed in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka and other major cities after hundreds of students clashed with security forces on Wednesday, one person being killed and at least 400 injured in the skirmishes.
The students are displeased with the emergency rule imposed by the military-backed government seven months ago. Violence broke out at an university campus in central Dhaka on Tuesday and continued to spread across the country on Wednesday, hundreds of people clashing with government troops on the streets.
After holding an emergency meeting, the interim government decided to withdraw army troops from the campus and urged students to cease their acts of violence that have reached other universities and colleges across Bangladesh.
A group of students expressed their discontent towards the state of emergency that continues to rule the nation and torched a police vehicle in the capital early Tuesday.
Fierce clashes quickly erupted between protesters and government forces, one person being killed after police officers opened fire on demonstrators in the northwestern city of Rajshahi.
Dozens of cars and billboards were destroyed or damaged by rage-driven students in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong and Khulna. Several police officers were injured in street battles with the demonstrators, while traffic was paralyzed in the mentioned cities.
In the wake of political turmoil and corruption charges, the government declared emergency law in January, forbidding public demonstrations or political activities. Army camps were set up across the country to prevent acts of violence, such a camp being established on the campus of Dhaka University.
