This week a new startup on the Internet search market was launched. The new service, called Cuil and pronounced 'cool,' has stirred both positive and negative reaction from specialists, but two things are sure: the new search engine has been one of the most visible startups in recent time, and it has managed to attract the attention of many Internet users.
The staff of the new search engine announced that Cuil indexes the largest number of pages among all similar services of the moment. However, many tests have shown that the results that Cuil generates are far less than the ones Google does. Another claim made by the people at Cuil was that the startup has a different approach at determining the relevance of the results. While Google sorts the results based on the popularity of the pages, Cuil does so looking at their relevancy as well as the context in which the information appears.
According to Cuil's website, “rather than rely on superficial popularity metrics, Cuil searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance. When we find a page with your keywords, we stay on that page and analyze the rest of its content, its concepts, their inter-relationships and the page’s coherency.”
One thing that made people skeptical about Cuil was the service outages that occurred during the first days of its release. However, this might have happened because of the extremely large number of people that rushed to test it. While the service might have been launched a little too early, it is possible that its management will take steps in order to repair all these problems.
