On Monday, Cryptic Studios has finally put fans at ease when it confirmed that it has taken on Star Trek Online’s development and publishing rights. It was announced that more information about the game would be made available during the annual Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas, scheduled for August 10. Those unable to attend the event will get the chance to see it live on the official Star Trek Online website.
Chief Creative Officer Jack Emmert showed great enthusiasm while talking about the upcoming game and said he and his colleagues were "absolutely thrilled" to learn about the possibility to get Star Trek’s license.
Star Trek Online had initially beed taken on by Perpetual Entertainment, which was also involved in the development of Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising. However, towards the end of 2007, the company experienced some problems and, after having laid off 40 employees, it announced it would temporarily stop working on Gods and Heroes in order to direct all its efforts into Star Trek Online. Things didn’t end up well for Perpetual, in the meantime renamed P2 Entertainment, and in January 2008, the company was no longer the game’s developer.
While a release date has yet to be announced, what we do know so far is that Star Trek Online will be available on both PCs and consoles. Judging by the look of the first screens of the game, one could built up rather high expectations with regard to the upcoming title; it remains to be seen whether or not Cryptic Studios will bring what everyone is hoping for.
