Tom Cruise warned everybody that Katie Holmes’ birthday party will be something special. Yesterday night, as Katie took the bow at the end of her performance in “All My Sons”, John Lithgow – cast mate in the play – let the public know that “Tom Cruise, our good friend, devoted fan to the show, doting husband of Katie, could not be here tonight. He's heartsick that he couldn't be here ... but he wanted to make his presence felt. So, he's joining us, inviting all of you, to celebrate Katie's birthday.”

 

One of the surprises that awaited Katie was a five-tiered birthday cake, made especially for her, from her loving husband Tom Cruise. The actor’s plan included John Lithgow getting the whole audience to wish Katie Holmes a happy birthday at the end of the show. Tom Cruise couldn’t make it because he was premiering his new movie, “Valkyrie.”

 

The two actors are known for their devotion to their work – so much so, that they missed spending a birthday together. The same fate will be shared at the Golden Globe Awards.

 

On January the 11^th, the day of the Awards, is the last show for “All My Sons,” and Katie Holmes hasn’t missed a performance so far, despite the fact that her part is the smallest of the four leading roles. On the same night, Tom Cruise has to be at the Golden Globe Awards, where he is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his brief appearance in “Tropic Thunder.” The question now is who will be joining Cruise, as Katie will perform in the Broadway play. Will it be his mother? His and Nicole Kidman’s daughter, Isabella? Or the enchanting Suri?
