The movie California Dreamin, directed by romanian director Cristian Nemescu, won the Prix Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival Saturday. Cristian Nemescu died last year in a tragic car accident at the age of 27.
"It was by far the most vibrant and most free cinematic offer that we have seen during the past 10 days," the head of the jury, French director Pascale Ferran said at the award ceremonies.
The Jury of Un Certain Regard was presided by Pascale Ferran and made up of Romanian Cristi Puiu, French actress Jasmine Trinca, American stage director Kent Jones and Chinese critic Bian Qin.
Nemescu's movie focuses on events during the war in Kosovo in 1999 when the head of the railway station in a small Romanian village stops a NATO train transporting military equipment. Supervised by US soldiers, it is crossing Romania without official documents and with only verbal approval from the Romanian government.
Also, Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu was named winner of the Jury of the International Critics Award from the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) for his film 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days, which is set during the dark days of Nicolae Ceausescu's reign.
