Almost a month after Rihanna was allegedly attacked by her fellow singer boyfriend in a domestic violence case, Chris Brown has yet to be formally charged with any crime by prosecutors.
However, the 19-year-old R&B star has a standing court today in Los Angeles and may be demanded to show up personally at the arraignment depending on whether the District Attorney’s Office files a case against the singer.
The court date could nevertheless be postponed in an attempt to gather more review. For instance, the DA could take more time to analyze the evidence or even hand the case to the City Attorney for less grave charges.
Chris Brown was taken into police custody on February 8 following an alleged confrontation with 21-year-old Rihanna in Los Angeles, the morning before the Grammy Awards ceremony. Police booked the musician on a felony criminal threat charge, scheduled an arraignment for Thursday and started a thorough investigation.
During his court appearance on Thursday, the DA could charge Chris Brown with any number of felonies, including domestic violence and making criminal threats, each containing a maximum three years in state prison. Nonetheless, the DA could also file a mix of felonies and misdemeanors.
If charged with a felony, the singer will be required to appear in court in person and could enter a plea. However, of the DA does not file a case against Chris Brown on Thursday, he will not be obliged to show up in court and would be notified to come back to court at a later date.
The best situation for Chris Brown would be the one in which the DA could refuse to file formal charges and pass on the case to the City Attorney’s office for misdemeanor investigation, which could last days or even weeks.
