A courageous dog, too heavy to be able to
walk, miraculously survived being frozen to a sidewalk overnight.
The 59-year-old woman from Wisconsin who owns
Jiffy, an aging border collie, let him out of the house in 6 degrees weather. The
dog ended up being literally frozen to the sidewalk. A neighbour saw the dog
stuck to the sidewalk and called police.
The local human society arrived at the
scene and loosened Jiffy with warm water. It appears that Jiffy’s fat helped
him survive one night in the bone-chilling weather.
“It is very disturbing to see a dog that
overweight and then to actually come up and see the dog frozen to the sidewalk.
It was very, very traumatic for me. I’ve never seen a dog actually frozen to a
sidewalk before,” Human Society worker Carey Payne, one of the people sent to
help the dog said. Officials at the Humane Society say they’ve received more
than a half dozen calls from people who want to adopt the 11-year-old dog.
Jiffy’s owner was arrested for animal abuse
and released. The woman told police she tried to get the dog inside but she
couldn’t, so she left the dog there. The district attorney is considering
whether to charge Jiffy’s owner.
Excess weight is dangerous to a dog. Obesity
and excess body weight are estimated to affect more than 20 percent of dogs. Obesity
is recognized as the most common nutrition disease in companion animals. Workers
at the Sheboygan County Humane Society suggest the dog was abused long before
he was frozen.
