A Louisa County
couple accused of letting their two kids get into cocaine went in Louisa
Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court for a preliminary hearing.
Authorities charged Brenda Darice Quarles,
26, and Derrick Andre Christmas, 25, with two counts of felony child neglect
after their two kids, 16 months old and 3 years old, tested positive for
cocaine.
The judge had the chance to hear from some
witnesses who described what happened in the morning of April 16. Quarles’
sister, Sharon Hughes, who was baby-sitting the boys that morning, said she
remained at home with the kids after Brenda Quarles left for a hair appointment
about 7:30. Hughes saw that the children were acting strangely (they were
staggering and very sleepy), so she called her sister to say she was taking
them to the doctor.
A doctor, a nurse and a lab tech also
testified in the court. They all said that the urine tests for both the kids
were positive for cocaine and a drug similar to Valium.
But the defense attorneys said that all
prescription medication that was found in the home has child proof caps. As a
result, the incident could not have happened in the home.
Prosecutor Rusty McGuire said she agreed
that the test results could not be permitted.
“We argued that the drug activity at the
home as well as the condition of that home was not safe for children,” said Deputy Commonwealth’s
Attorney, Rusty McGuire.
“Well, I can’t describe the condition but I
think the judge said it best when she said it was absolutely filth,” McGuire
concluded.
A grand jury will hear the evidence in the
case Sept. 8.
