Cotillard, Cody and Cohen among New Oscar Voters

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is welcoming within its privileged ranks 105 new voters that are to decide who merits an Academy Award and among the lucky invitees are Marion Cotillard, Diablo Cody and Sacha Baron Cohen.

More than 100 luminaries – filmmakers, actors, writers, executives and others in the movie business - have been invited to join the proud ranks of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members and among those, several are nominees or even winners from the past couple of years.

French actress Marion Cotillard received a golden statuette last year for her portrayal of French icon Edith Piaf in “La Vie en Rose,” a film that was widely acclaimed by critics.

Diablo Cody is another breakthrough artist who received her first Oscar nomination – and win – this year, as screenwriter of the teen pregnancy comedy “Juno.” Best-director nominee Jason Reitman was also invited, as was Allison Janney, who portrayed the title character’s stepmother.

Ruby Dee, supporting-actress nominee for last year’s “American Gangster” and Sacha Baron Cohen, who received a screenplay nomination the previous year with “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,” were likewise invited.

Other invitees announced Monday were Josh Brolin (“No Country for Old Men”), Chinese martial arts expert Jet Li and British actor Ray Winstone, who most recently appeared in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”

Other notable names include directors Doug Liman (“The Bourne Identity”), Kimberly Peirce (“Boys Don’t Cry”) and Gore Verbinski (“The Pirates of the Caribbean” movies), as well as Judd Apatow (screenplay “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”), Jeff Nathanson (screenplay “Catch Me If You Can”) and Tamara Jenkins (screenplay “The Savages”).

Academy President Sid Ganis said in a statement that the 105 stars are “all incredibly talented and a credit to the world of filmmaking,” individuals who “exemplify the high standards of the Academy.”

The Academy numbers nearly 6,000 members.
