Copperfield Magic Brings $1 Million Loss to Southeast Asian Promoters

David Copperfield’s cancellation of previously scheduled performances in Southeast Asia has left his promoters dissatisfied and looking for a way to not lose even more money.

In the midst of an FBI investigation that has included a raid of David Copperfield’s Las Vegas warehouse and disbelief over allegations from a Seattle woman that the illusionist “forced himself” on her, the entertainer has canceled a string of performances throughout Southeast Asia.

While the FBI investigation goes on, without many details being released to the media, promoters of the scheduled shows in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia are disgruntled. They have reportedly lost some $1 million through advertising and preparing for the magician’s shows – that are at the moment not happening.

Peter Basuki, involved in organizing Copperfield’s show in Jakarta, is trying to reschedule the performances. He stated for BBC: “With this cancellation, we have lost more than $1 million for advertising and other preparations. Business is business. We want to make a profit. But this is making us lose money.”

Kittiyong Achawaphong of RSi Dream Entertainment, the company that organized the illusionist’s shows in Thailand, told the Associated Press Monday: “His management sent an e-mail to organizers Sunday to inform that his shows will be postponed indefinitely.”

If he doesn’t reschedule the shows, 51-year-old Copperfield might be liable for lost revenue. He was supposed to perform in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore in the following weeks. His lawyer, David Chesnoff, told the AP Monday that the shows were canceled because tour operators in Asia did not respect the contracts. “Those are serious allegations,” Chesnoff said. “But there's no truth to them.”

As to the reported accusations of the yet unidentified Seattle woman, Chesnoff has insisted that his client has never “forced himself on anyone, because that is not the person he is.”

“He is a complete gentleman. David is a very intelligent person who understands that people often come after others based on their celebrity status. There is no doubt that this is a false accusation,” Chesnoff has said.

The FBI has not offered any details as to its investigation. When Copperfield’s warehouse was raided last week, agents seized a computer hard drive and a digital-camera memory card. FBI Special Agent Robbie Burroughs has denied reports that nearly $2 million in cash was likewise seized.
