Argentina is set to play against Brazil in the final of Copa America on Sunday in Maracaibo, Venezuela.
The match is a sort of deja vu, because Argentina has played another nine finals against
Brazil in Copa America. In those
matches, Argentina
won eight and lost one in Peru 2004 in the penalty shoot-out, after Brazilian
star Adriano only scored the equalizer in injury time.
Argentina
is playing the tournament with their first-choice squad and it has paid off -
they are the only team to have won all their games in Venezuela, and have done so in
great style.
For Brazil,
the things are a little different, because Ronaldinho and Kaka opted out of the
tournament in order to rest after a long European season, and left coach Carlos
Dunga before the daunting task of defending the title with a B squad.
Also, Brazil
lost their debut game to Mexico
and was unconvincing throughout the first round, but eventually they crashed Chile
with 6-0. But in the semis, Brazil
was close to loose in front of Uruguay.
On the other side, Argentina
who defeated Mexico in the
semis, seems quite happy to play against Brazil. "Playing Brazil (in the final) is the
best," Argentinean coach Basile said in no uncertain terms.
And Argentine players appear set to enjoy the final in the
knowledge that their performance in Venezuela has been outstanding.
"We have achieved the minimum objective, which was to get to the final.
Now the most beautiful part lies ahead," said Argentine captain Roberto
Ayala.
