Controversial Anna Nicole Smith Remembered

On February 8, 2007, a year ago, Vickie Lynn Marshall aka Anna Nicole Smith died.

A Texas native, she became world famous in 1993, when she was Playboy’s Playmate of the Year. In 1994, she married oil billionaire J. Howard Marshall, when she was 26 and he was 89. Marshall, who was worth $1.6 billion, died 14 months later. His death has lead to a series of legal disputes between Smith and Marshall’s son, E. Pierce Marshall.

Anna Nicole Smith, 39, died at a Florida-casino hotel a year ago because of an accidental drug overdose, a fatal concoction of medication she was taking for depression, weight loss, anti-aging and for insomnia. She was buried in the Bahamas on March 2, nearly a month after her death.

A fierce legal battle followed, in which photographer Larry Birkhead won custody over their daughter, Dannielynn Hope Marshall Stern, from Anna's lawyer Howard K. Stern, while the latter remained executor to Anna's estate.

"I love you and hope you are proud of our beautiful baby girl. Please watch over us and guide us on our journey through life. We miss you. Love, Larry and Dannielynn," wrote Larry Birkhead on his website.

"In memory of Anna Nicole and her son Daniel, we have created the Anna Nicole and Daniel Wayne Smith Charitable Foundation. It will benefit charitable causes that Anna Nicole supported during her life: children, the elderly, and the treatment and cure of AIDS. Hopefully it will grow, help more people each year, and eventually be headed by her daughter Dannielynn," wrote Howard K. Stern to Entertainment Tonight.

Following her death, a video tape of Anna’s 1994 breast augmentation has been the subject of dispute. A judge issued a restraining order that prevented the release the videotape at the request of Smith's former attorney and executor of her will, Howard K. Stern. The former lawyer, lover (?) and executor of Anna Nicole Smith’s will, Howard K. Stern, has accused at the time Dr. Gerald Wayne Johnson, the doctor who had performed the surgery, of sending the video tape to a Los Angeles memorial dealer.

Furthermore, Stern has also claimed that the doctor had filmed the procedure without Smith’s consent. But Gerald Wayne Johnson has replied by saying that he routinely records the surgeries with the patients’ permission, while promising them to keep the video confidential “during the patient’s lifetime”.

Just months prior to her untimely demise, her son Daniel died because of an overdose of prescription medication. Bahamian pathologist Dr. Govinda Raju testified in December last year that the 20-year-old’s death was caused by a lethal combination of methadone and antidepressants Zoloft and Lexapro, while five other drugs were also found in his system, including those used by the medical personnel in an attempt to revive him after he collapsed while visiting his mother at a Nassau hospital.
