Hulu has announced that its content will no longer be available through Boxee, at the request of their content providers. Despite not having a formal relationship with Boxee, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar wrote in a blog posting that this has weighed heavily on the Hulu team, but they are respecting the wishes of their providers.
According to Kilar, while they believe in a world of media convergence, they also believe that the best way to fulfill their mission of making media easier for users is to work closely with content owners. Their mission has not changed however, despite this decision, he continued.
The maddening part of writing this blog entry is that we realize that there is no immediate win here for users, Kilar added.
I must say this is maddening for users, more than it could ever be for Hulu, since Boxee users will have to start reconsidering their options.
After generating over 100,000 streams of Hulu content, Boxee was left behind, but this is not going to end here. According to a posting on Boxee’s blog, discussions with Hulu and content ownsers will be made:
We will tell them how users love Hulu on Boxee, why it represents a great opportunity for them to better engage with fans of their shows, how Boxee can help in exposing their content to new people, and why they should be excited about future opportunities of working with us, Boxee’s blog writes.
