A large construction crane collapsed Friday on an apartment
building in Manhattan's Upper
East Side, killing one person.
According to Reuters, the New York City Fire Department said
that the victim was the operator of the crane and he died shortly after 8 a.m. They also said that some other people were rescued but their condition was
not known.
The top of the crane smashed into “The Electra” apartment
building on East 91st Street,
causing damages to the balconies and filling the street below with debris.
The crane was working on a building, just across the street,
when the top piece flew right into the apartment building which was about 20
stories high.
This was the second Manhattan
crane collapse in two months, reported The New York Times. In March, a
tower crane crashed on East 51st
Street, killing 7 people and injuring about 10.
The accident happened just after the Buildings Department said
that it would no longer be necessary for the workers to be at the construction
site when a crane was made taller. They want to create a safer system so that
the workers are informed about the proper procedures.
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said Friday that the New York City officials
have to determine the cause of the accident and to prevent the situation to
occur again.
