Conan O'Brien is heading to Los Angeles, where NBC will fulfill a promise it made five years ago to turn him into the "Tonight" show host. That new show is set to begin in June. The current "Tonight" host Jay Leno will continue on an NBC talk show, moving up himself to 10 p.m. in the fall.
For his last show, O'Brien took a sledgehammer and an ax to his stage set this week and gave his fans souvenirs. The show was taped on Friday evening and aired at 12:35 a.m.
Some in the TV industry have questioned whether O'Brien's silly and absurd humor would fly on the "Tonight" show. But the time slot is now a comfortable home to Stephen Colbert on Comedy Central and a popular lineup on The Cartoon Network that appeals to a coveted audience of young men.
NBC has built a new studio for Jimmy Fallon, who replaces O'Brien beginning the 2nd of March.
Last week’s show was the 2,725th for O'Brien. There were plenty of doubts he would even reach triple figures considering his rocky start in television, as an unknown comedy writer chosen to replace David Letterman. He paid an effusive tribute to Letterman, who soon became his direct competitor.
