Community Gets Involved in Finding Health Care Solutions

Barack Obama’s plan to ask the people for advice on how to tackle the health care problem is showing the first signs of success. Thousands of people across the United States answered the future U.S. President’s call to host small groups to brainstorm for ideas and solutions for the problem.

On Sunday, the President Elect’s transition team gathered information from the numerous discussions held. The data included videos and photos which the team waited to be uploaded on its Web site.

The transition team said that, as of last week, it received reports from more than 600 groups. As much as 120 meeting to discuss the health care plan were held in the state of Ohio alone, said transition team spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

Most discussions were marked by heartbreaking stories of people who struggled to cope with the costs of healthcare, while the main idea of the discussions held across the United States was change.

"The major theme that is emerging is the need for change, no matter where people are on the ideological spectrum or whether they are businesspeople, patients or providers," said Psaki in an e-mail to Cleveland.com.

Meanwhile, the Congressional Budget Office stated that the United States may, in fact, not have the necessary infrastructure to support the increase in home- and community-based services.

The office’s report underlined the projected costs of more than 100 healthcare policies. A health care plan under which beneficiaries would have the option of choosing between home, community and institutional care, could cost up to $90 billion over the next decade.

The Congressional Budget Office’s report concluded that, although the health care plan would expand service options to more Medicaid beneficiaries, the majority of states won’t have the necessary infrastructure to put up with the increased demand for HCBS.
