Indian commandoes managed to free some people who were being held hostage in the luxury hotels in Mumbay by gunmen. The operation took an entire day during which the commandoes and soldiers evacuated several people from the two hotels: the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower and the Trident Oberoi complex.

The gunmen already killed 101 people and injured about 300. Some of the dead and wounded were foreigners. The number of people who are still trapped inside the luxury hotels is unknown. The operation carried out by the Indian commandoes also involved a Jewish center.

The gunmen who seized the two hotels in India’s financial capital, Mumbai, are members of a militant group based outside India. The number of people who are still being held hostages includes a British, Australian and Japanese national, officials said. According to the British Foreign Office, one Briton has been killed and seven other were wounded.

A more aggressive operation will be carried out soon, said Mumbai's Director General of Police, A.N. Ray, Voice Of America reported. The approximate number of terrorists involved in the attacks is unknown. They stormed the two hotels armed with guns and grenades saying they were targeting Americans and Britons.

"Wherever there are these terrorists holed up, we will either catch them alive or shoot them," he said. "So, all our forces are completely geared up. Either they will kill them or nab them."

The terrorist attacks prompted many companies to shut their activities in the Mumbai offices. Stocks, bonds, currencies and commodities trading have been halted. The two luxury hotels that were seized are near the financial district, which houses big companies such as Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and HSBC Holdings Plc.
