"The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart is set to host the next year’s annual
Oscar ceremony for the second time, an official announcement is yet to
be made.
According to a New York Times report,
the 44-year-old television celebrity, who hosted the 78th Academy
Awards ceremony with much critical praise, will be back for the 80th.
This year's Oscar show was hosted by talk show host and comedienne
Ellen DeGeneres.
Apparently, the announcement is scheduled for Wednesday, according to
two people involved with the plan who spoke anonymously because they
were not authorized to talk to the news media.
Stewart, who previously served as host of the Grammy Awards in 2001 and
2002, said two years ago he was honored to be hosting the Oscars
ceremony, "Although, as an avid watcher of the Oscars, I can't help but
be a little disappointed with the choice. It appears to be another sad
attempt to smoke out Billy Crystal." Crystal hosted the even eight
times including the 1998 ceremony which drew 55 million viewers.
Stewart’s 2006 performance drew around 38.9 million viewers, slightly
less than the 39.9 million who watched this year’s ceremony.
The next year’s annual Oscar ceremony is scheduled for February 24 at
the Kodak Theater in Hollywood and will be broadcast by ABC.
Previous hosts include Steve Martin, Chris Rock, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal.
Herald Tribune
reported that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced
the upcoming show’s producer will be Gil Cates for the 14th time,
surpassing the previous most-prolific producer, Howard W. Koch, with
eight shows, in 1998.
"He's so talented, so creative and inventive, and so enormously
passionate about the Oscars," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "All of
that will again translate into a night that people can't wait to
experience."
