Friday, Jerry Lewis, the well-known comedian, was detained
by the police for a short period of time as he tried to board a flight
possessing an unloaded gun in his baggage. According to E! Online, authorities
said that Jerry Lewis, 82, was detained at Las Vegas’
McCarran International Airport
because airport screeners found an unloaded gun in his carry-on luggage.
Officer Ramon Denby, a spokesman for the Las Vegas
Metropolitan Police Department, said that Lewis had a small .22-caliber
Beretta. “The Nutty Professor” star was cited for carrying a concealed weapon
without having a permit. Police confiscated the gun.
A spokesman for the comedian could not be reached for
comment.
Jerry Lewis’s manager Claudia Marghilano said that the
handgun was a prop gun for his show, adding that the gun could not fire. She
also said that Lewis was unaware that the weapon was in his luggage. Las Vegas
Metropolitan Police spokesman Officer Bill Cassell said that the gun had been a
prop gun, “it wouldn't be a weapon, and we couldn't cite him for carrying a
weapon,” reported E! Online.
The comedian was traveling to Mount Pleasant, Michigan,
to perform a one-man show. Officer Ramon Denby said that Jerry Lewis would have
to go to a court hearing in order to get the weapon back.
Jerry Lewis is known for his duo with singer Dean Martin and
for memorable roles like the 1963 part in “The Nutty Professor” and the 1982
role in “The King of Comedy.” Lewis has also been hosting the annual telethon
to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Last year the telethon
raised about $63 million.
The actor was still allowed to board his flight.
