Cold Weather Hits Upper Midwest

On Sunday a cold weather extended from the northern Plains to the Northeast, bringing a lot of snow in some parts of Michigan and triggered a pileup of cars in Pennsylvania.

According to Lt. Jason Zoshak of Hazleton Township Fire and Rescue, a woman died in the pileup in Pennsylvania because her car was blocked under a tractor trailer.

Almost 35 people got injured and 24 people who were left without cars were taken to the shelters.

People jumped out of their cars on an embankment and they were rescued by firefighters with ropes.

Zoshak said: "They had a heavy snow squall going through the area, zero visibility, high winds. There were vehicles everywhere," the Associated Press reports.

In Pennsylvania a 48-year-old man was killed by 60-foot tree which fell due to the force of the winds onto a sport utility vehicle on a Berks County road. His wife was seriously injured, according to state police.

Interstates and highways in Wisconsin were closed due to the icy driving conditions which were formed.  On Sunday wind chills set the temperature to 35 degrees below zero.

Seven-mile stretch of Interstate 39/90 just south of Madison was closed for an hour and a half by the Wisconsin State Highway Patrol due to the icy driving conditions.

In the same area, but on the other way, thousands of motorists remained stranded for 12 hours last week in a snow storm.

According to Michigan State Police, the Mackinac Bridge, long of five miles which makes the connection between Michigan's two peninsulas, was closed several hours because of the bad weather conditions. Sunday evening it was reopened.

The Grand Rapids Press said that churches in western Michigan were forced to cancel service.

William Marino, a weather service meteorologist in Grand Rapids, said: "The road conditions are just terrible. There's been slide-offs all over and the roads are very icy,"

In Madison, Wis., temperature was of minus 4, and in Green Bay was of minus 6, with a wind chill of minus 32.

In International Falls, Minn. the temperature was of 15 degrees below zero Sunday afternoon, but the wind chill was below 40.
