The U.S. Coast Guard continues to monitor and assist the Catalunya Spirit tanker. The ship carrying liquefied natural gas lost its propulsion thus becoming disabled and adrift east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on Monday.
The Unified Command at Coast Guard Sector Boston said in a recently released statement that Teekay Corporation, the company operating the tanker, already contracted four tugboats and three technical representatives on Monday to assist Catalunya Spirit.
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is currently collaborating with the Coast Guard and is trying to minimize the risk to the public and the environment.
The statement released by the Coast Guard Sector Boston that although the tanker did not suffer any structural damage nor it had any leak, the Coast Guard Sector Boston has notified the National Strike Team and is helping to manage salvage and pollution response assets.
The 933-foot vessel is currently being towed west to an offshore location 25 miles east of Provincetown. There its problems will be fixed. The Catalunya Spirit was on its way to Boston from Trinidad and Tobago, but, unfortunately, its journey is delayed by the unexpected malfunction.
The latest reports show that a Coast Guard marine inspector is currently aboard the tanker accompanied by repair crews.
Another crew from Air Station Cape Cod will arrive today to bring additional personnel to the vessel. The additional personnel will include a technician and another representative from the Coast Guard.
