An employee at Spotlight Live club where rapper Lil’ Kim threw her birthday party was taken into custody Thursday after admitting to have beaten to death a woman on the club's roof during an quarrel, the authorities said.
24-year-old Syed Rahman confessed he bashed Ingrid Rivera with a pipe over the head at about 2:45 a.m. on Monday. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in a press conference that the victim, fan of singer Lil’ Kim, had paid to attend the party. Her body was found Wednesday afternoon, one day after her mother, who was living with her, called the police to report the disappearance of the partygoer.
One thing is for sure: the perpetrator and the victim had met for the first time inside the Times Square club that night. However, the authorities haven’t found out yet what triggered the quarrel between the two. According to one of Rivera’s friends, the man was irritated by the young woman’s reaction to hypothetical forceful sexual advances from him. Earlier in the evening, they both had chatted with the culprit while having a drink at the bar.
Rahman, who had worked at the club for four years, had no previous criminal record. Yesterday, he was detained and charged with second-degree murder in the death of Ingrid Rivera. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
The death of the 24-year-old Rivera has been ruled a homicide, a medical examiner said. The autopsy report shows that the woman passed away from a blow to the head.
