Actor George Clooney made an appeal to the two largest actor unions at Hollywood to start working together for the good of its members. The actor took this position as the Screen Actors Guild, also known as SAG, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, or AFTRA, have shown different ideas regarding the way they plan to negotiate contracts with the studios.
The main thing that both unions are fighting for is obtaining better deals for the actors for their work that is sold by film studios in DVD format or using online streaming. Even though SAG and AFTRA both want the same things, the main problem is the difference in the negotiation strategy that the two unions adopt.
Studios must come with one last offer, and if that will be rejected by the unions, they will have to accept the deal that the studios have come up with at their last meeting. The only solution out of this would be for the actors to go on strike, and this way to force the studios at the negotiation table once again.
If the Screen Actors Guild believes that going on strike would benefit its members more, the AFTRA has just the opposite opinion. SAG has recently made an appeal to its members that are also part of AFTRA to vote against the deal that will be offered by the studios.
Clooney suggested that the two unions should stop fighting against each other and should make a panel of 10 well paid actors that the studios don’t usually refuse, which should annually represent the actor’s interests in front of the film companies.
Another thing that Clooney suggested was breaking the $6000 barrier that actors pay to the unions when they earn more than $1 million. According to the actor, paying $6000 for each $1 million made would mean more money going to pensions and health care.
