Los Angeles - Mighty FC Barcelona came to Los Angeles for the weekend, and although they left without any victories, they weren't too disappointed about it.
Al Thornton collected 23 points with 11 rebounds, and rookie Eric Gordon erupted for 12 of his 17 points in the final quarter, leading the Los Angeles Clippers past FC Barcelona 114-109 on Sunday in a preseason play.
"We're happy with how it went," FC Barcelona head coach Xavier Pascual said. "You never feel good when you lose, but we leave with some good feelings. I think they used most of their best guys until the end and we were fighting until the end."
Ricky Davis had 16 points and Cuttino Mobley added 15 for the Clippers (4-1), who bounced back from a 93-89 loss to Toronto on Saturday night to win the consolation game of the annual Staples Centre Shootout, without key players Baron Davis (sprained left ring finger), Tim Thomas (groin strain), Marcus Camby (bruised heel) and Chris Kaman (rested).
Ersan Ilyasova scored 20 points and Jaka Lakovic added 19 for Barcelona, which lost to the host Lakers, 108-104 on Saturday night.
Juan Carlos Navarro was held to just 11 points on 2-of-10 shooting, after exploding for 34 points with seven 3-pointers in 41 minutes a night earlier.
"It's not easy to fly across the ocean and in two or three days to play great teams like the Clippers and the Lakers, but I think we did really well," Ilyasova said.
"It's exciting to be here for such a well-organised event between the Euroleague and the NBA, to see the difference between European and NBA teams," he added. "It's great for us to play as we have against the Lakers and the Clippers."
Gordon buried back-to-back 3-pointers in a 40-second span to give the Clippers a 102-93 advantage with 7:18 remaining. However, Lakovic and Lubos Barton answered with triples of their own, pulling the international team within 102-100 at the 5:03 mark.
Gordon made a pair of layups and sharpshooting Steve Novak nailed a 3-pointer to open up a 109-100 lead with 1:27 remaining. But FC Barcelona was not done.
Ilyasova ran off nine straight points, including an alley-oop dunk to draw the visitors within 111-109 with 29 seconds to go. But Mobley made two free throws to seal the win.
Elsewhere: LA Lakers 112, Toronto Raptors 89 Jordan Farmar scored 16 points and fellow-reserve Trevor Ariza had 14, sparking the Lakers past the visiting Raptors.
Kobe Bryant had 13 points before sitting out the final frame, when the Lakers (4-2) outscored their guests, 32-13 to turn the game into a rout.
Anthony Parker and Hassan Adams led Toronto (4-3) with 14 points. Jermaine O'Neal added 12 points while Chris Bosh finished with 11 and 11 rebounds.
Boston Celtics 83, New Jersey Nets 66 Celtics centre Kendrick Perkins had 18 points and nine rebounds, to help the defending league champions cruise past the Nets, in a preseason game.
Gabe Pruitt, filling in for starting point guard Rajon Rondo (ankle sprain) collected 11 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for visiting Boston (6-2) which dominated the boards, 56-29.
Rookie Ryan Anderson tossed in 20 points for the cold-shooting Nets (2-2), who hit just 32 per cent (23-of-72) of their field goals.
Minnesota Timberwolves 111, Denver Nuggets 107 Veteran backup guard Kevin Ollie made four free throws in the final 16 seconds - his only points of the game - giving the Timberwolves their third straight preseason victory.
Ryan Gomes scored a game-high 20 points and Mike Miller had 17 for the Timberwolves (5-1) who limited the Nuggets to one field goal in the final five minutes. Al Jefferson added 15 points while Randy Foye finished with 12 and 15 assists
