Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton
unveiled her plan to find a breast cancer cure, including $300 million annually
for research, if elected, during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on
Monday.
“We should set a goal of curing breast cancer within the
next decade. We should make it absolutely totally curable, and I also really
want to try to figure out what causes it, because we just don’t know why some
people are susceptible,” Clinton
said.
She also added that the plan would improve access to
screenings and treatment by making mammograms more affordable and providing
funding for treatment for low- income women.
” I think it's probably a combination of your genes and your
environment and your behavior, but we don't know quite how all that fits
together and we haven't done enough research, and we also have to get to
universal healthcare, which means quality, affordable healthcare for everyone.”
Breast cancer is the second greatest killer among women
nationwide. According to an American Cancer Society survey released last year,
in New York, 20 percent to 30 percent of breast cancer cases from 2000-2004
were fatal.
Current federal funding for breast cancer research is $750
million annually. Clinton’s
goal is to raise that to as much as $1.5 billion annually with the next decade,
the New York Times reported.
“She made commitments to us years ago, in regards to women’s
health…She’s never let us down. Those dollars are very meaningful to us, and it’ll
be our legacy for our children,” said Karen Joy Miller, founder and president
of the Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition.
