“Gran Torino” topped this past weekend’s box-office by earning $29 million from tickets sale. The movie overcame “Bride Wars” and “The Unborn,” which seemed to be too commercial to race Eastwood’s experience. People clearly chose Eastwood because his is still a living legend.
“Gran Torino” features a Hmong cast and also Eastwood’s younger son, Scott Eastwood. His older son, Kyle Eastwood, was the one who provided the score for the movie. On December 12, 2008 “Gran Torino” was opened to theatres in North America in a limited release and on January 9, 2009, the movie opened to a wide release.
Directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Nick Schenk, “Gran Torino” was produced by Village Readshow Pictures, Media Magik Entertainment and Malpaso Productions for film distributor Warner Bros. Robert Lornez and Bill Gerber were also among the people on producing the movie.
“Gran Torino” was mainly shot in the state of Michigan and it was the first movie which took advantage of the state's new law that provided lucrative incentive packages to film productions. Highland Park, Warren and Royal Oak were among the locations of the shooting, which began in July, 2008.
The plot of the movie designs character Walt Kowalski, played by Eastwood, who is a Korean war veteran and now lives in a neighborhood from Detroit, which is full of immigrants. Throughout the movie, Walt considers that his grandchildren have no respect for their grandmother’s death and has no patience with his two sons either.
The movie is regarded as a potential winner at the Academy Awards.
