Clay Aiken to Pursue Broadway Career

“American Idol” runner-up Clay Aiken has found a new artistic path to tread on: a role in the Broadway production of “Monty Python's Spamalot,” Mike Nichols’ comedic musical.

The Billboard Award-winning singer will join the cast of the original New York production of “Monty Python's Spamalot,” according to the Associated Press. Starting with January 18, Clay Aiken, 28, will replace David Hyde Pierce, 48, in the role of Sir Robin.

Pierce has been playing the part since the show first opened in March 2005. Sir Robin is described in program notes for the production as “a cowardly knight well versed in the world of musical theater.”

Aiken shared his feelings on joining the Tony Award winning musical: “I really couldn't have asked for a more wonderful group of people to work with. Let's not lie, the chance to work with legendary creative minds like Mike Nichols and Eric Idle is, on its own, a reason to jump at this opportunity.”

The AP reports that Aiken will appear in the show, which is based on the 1975 film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” through May 4, 2008. The musical's book is by Idle, an original member of the Python gang, and its score is by Idle and John DuPrez.

The show’s director is just as enthused about working with Aiken. “Clay Aiken is amazing beyond that glorious voice,” Nichols said. “Turns out he is an excellent comic actor and a master of character.”

Clay Aiken became famous in 2003, while participating on “American Idol's” second season. Although he lost to Ruben Studdard, Aiken made quite an impression and soon launched a musical career.

He released his first solo album, “Measure of a Man,” in 2003, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200. From there on, success has been a part of the 28-year-old singer’s. He has also dabbled in hosting various shows such as “The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet” and “Live with Regis and Kelly.”

“Monty Python's Spamalot” has won three Tony Awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical of the 2004–2005 season.
