Citations Season Begins With Memorial Day Weekend

The “Click it or ticket” campaign started May 19 in Lubbock and will end on June 1st. The Commerce Police Department, the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office, The Texas Department of Transportation and the Texas Department of Public Safety, along with Texas law enforcements agencies joined forces to remind drivers and passengers about the importance of safety belts.

As this weekend is the Memorial Day Weekend, police will have to pay more attention to drivers, because AAA statistics said that 31.7 million Americans are expected to travel by automobile this Memorial Day Weekend, reported Lancaster Eagle Gazette.

More police officers will be called on duty to assure that the traffic on Memorial Day weekend will run smoothly. They will also be very careful to see if all the drivers and passengers respect the Click it or ticket Campaign by having their seat belts on.

Drivers who will be caught without a safety belt on, could get an $86 fine. And, if a motorist has a backseat passenger younger than 15 who is not wearing a seatbelt, the fine will increase with $76.

Sgt. Aaron Vollmer of the State Highway Patrol's Lancaster Post said that the patrols will start today at 10 p.m and will continue until Tuesday morning. They will keep an eye of every law violation, not only those related to seat belts.

Vollmer said that people are usually in a hurry and get tickets for speeding.

Another officer, Sgt. Mike Peters said that, in general, people who get caught with no safety belt on have all sorts of silly reasons for not respecting the law.

“Drivers will also say that they aren't wearing a seatbelt because it's uncomfortable or simply because they forgot, “said Peters, reported Lancaster Eagle Gazette.
