Chrysler has announced its plans to turn cars into mobile wireless hot spots, as it plans to allow them to be equipped with devices that will permit on-the-go internet access. The brands that the company mentioned to have the option in the future will be some 2009 models of Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler.
The service that the company will offer will be called ‘Uconnect’ and will permit devices like laptops, iPhones or iPods to be connected to the car. The system will offer WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity for the devices inside the car, and will most probably use 3G to connect the car to the internet.
The system, which benefits of a 30 GB hard disk too, will allow drivers to control devices like iPods using the controls located on the steering wheel as well as the ones from the car’s radio. What is more, the system will be able to recognize user commands thanks to its speech recognition tool. Of course, a touch screen will also be present.
Chrysler says that the new service will prove to be both fun and a useful tool. Kids in the back will be able to stream video content from the internet to the monitors that could be installed in the car, while the driver will be able to access road information or, let’s say, Google’s Map service.
Even though the company said that it hasn’t included any features that would restrict the driver’s internet usage so that it won’t put his life in danger, Chrysler will discourage activities that could lead to accidents.
