Chrysler LLC announced today that an innovative wireless
Internet system is currently in development and starting with 2009’s
production, all the willing purchasers of Chrysler vehicles in the United
States will benefit from the new feature.
"Unconnect web," as the program is called, will be
released in August 2009 and will provide a 100-foot range for all passengers with
Wi-Fi enabled devices of most of the Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge models. According
to the company’s officials, people will be able to browse the Internet and use
their laptops as if they were in the comfort of their own home or office. The
wireless router will also allow the use of smartphones, entertainment systems
and many other similar personal devices and gadgets.
The system will also provide navigation and real-time
traffic features, both controlled either by touchscreen or by voice
recognition, in addition to the built-in 30 Giga Bytes hard drive with satellite
television service and satellite radio.
The idea comes in a time when the auto manufacturers seek
new ways of attracting their customers, as the DVD players and GPS navigation
systems seem to be yesterday’s news.
"What UConnect Web does is turn the whole vehicle into
an Internet hot spot," said Keefe Leung, who works on advanced
connectivity strategies for Chrysler, according to USAToday. "We see great
potential for this," he added.
The announced price for the router is $449 and the monthly
fee for the service is set at $29. The plan was developed in collaboration with
Internet provider Autonet Mobile which also delivers the Avis Connect service.
