Christian Bale just starred as the main character in the second biggest-earning movie ever made, "The Dark Knight," along with the late Heath Ledger. His next part was that of the saintly FBI agent who hunts down John Dillinger played by Johnny Depp in the movie called "Public Enemies," directed by Michael Man, which will be released this summer. Therefore, Bale is expected to receive an Academy Award for his performances.
But in spite of his chances, he seems to be throwing away his Oscar hopes, because it is well known that people with a certain behavior do not receive such honor as being awarded by the Academy. It happened to many actors such as Peter O’Toole and Richard Burton, and it was not at all a simple coincidence. The two became the Oscars’ biggest losers, the first actor with eight defeats and the other with seven.
Early in his career, Marlon Brando was very excited by throwing his fists all over the place in Hollywood and being considered a bad boy. Unfortunately that did not help him too much to win an Oscar in 1951, but on the contrary, he left the ceremony hugely embarrassed. After all, he was the only cast member of “A Streetcar Named Desire” who did not win, in spite of all the widespread rumors that he would. After that, instead of amending his behavior, things only went from bad to worse for him as he lost best-actor nominations for "Viva Zapata!" and "Julius Caesar" over the next couple of years.
Apparently, just a few months ago, Christian Bale was accused of assaulting his own mother and as if that was not bad enough, he was also caught on tape while he was verbally abusing the director of photography of "Terminator Salvation," Shane Hurlbut.
Bale's long, profanity-laced verbal thrashing was not only for the cinematographer, but for anyone who tried to calm him down too. It all happened last July on the set of the upcoming “Terminator Salvation.”
According to the Associated Press, on the TMZ.com video of the whole incident, the actor rails against Hurlbut for apparently walking behind co-star Bryce Dallas Howard, which in Bales opinion was totally wrong, a foolish mistake.
Whoppi Goldberg said that Bale’s outburst was triggered by a professional who should have known better, and the incident might have occurred at the end of a long day of shooting. The actress also said that it usually is very difficult to suddenly come out of a character that you have worked hard to get into. Her comments had a calming effect on people who were ready to put Christian Bale against a wall and start shooting at him. But the question remains: is the “American Psycho” lead character turning into a psycho in real life too?
