Even though both Chris Brown and his girlfriend Rihanna pulled out of their Emmy Awards performance on Sunday night, they still managed to steal the spotlight after the R&B star was arrested for assault late on Sunday.
The name of Chris Brown’s alleged assault victim is still unknown, and will probably not be released to the press, according to Officer April Harding who told People that, “any victim who’s involved in a domestic violence incident is entitled to confidentiality.”
The 19-year-old singer was involved in a violent argument with a female inside a parked vehicle in Los Angeles’ Hancock Park neighborhood. The fight occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. The victim, who sustained visible injuries, phoned 911 and identified Brown as her attacker.
By the time police got to the scene, Brown had already left. He turned himself in at around 6 p.m. on Sunday and was booked an hour later on suspicion of making criminal threats.
Brown, who was described by authorities as acting “professional” during the processing, was released after posting $50,000 bail. Police said additional charges may be filed against him when the case is presented to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. A March 5 court date has been set.
“Detectives investigating the alleged domestic violence felony battery booked him for criminal threats,” a statement from the LAPD said. “At the time the case is presented to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, additional charges may be filed.”
Before Sunday’s incident, Brown and his girlfriend Rihanna appeared happy as they attended Clive Davis’ Grammy party on Saturday Night.
No-shows for Sunday night’s Grammy Awards, Brown and Rihanna were replaced with a performance of “Let’s Stay Together” by Justin Timberlake and Al Green. Rihanna was nominated for three awards while Brown was up for two, including in the best male R&B vocal performance category for his song “Take You Down.”
Reached for comment, Rihanna's publicist declined to say why the singer canceled her Grammys performance, saying only that she was “well” and expressing thanks for the concern. Brown's representatives also refused to discuss the allegations or his arrest.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department, and their spokesperson was careful to point out that any visible injuries change the charge from a misdemeanor to a felony. These can be very small injuries, “as small as a scratch.”
It is possible that while this is obviously an argument that has gotten out of hand and escalated to violence, it doesn’t mean that the woman is severely injured. Reports do not suggest she was hospitalized, so hopefully this is the case. According to sources familiar with the case, the victim was identified as Brown’s girlfriend, Rihanna.
Usher has also bowed out of his Grammy commitments. Josh Groban took his place at Clive Davis’ pre-party party, and confirmed that there was a family emergency.
