Dr. Phil Astin, the doctor of pro wrestler Chris Benoit, who
killed himself, his wife and his son in June 2007, faces 175 new charges for
conspiracy and improper prescribing of drugs.
The doctor is accused of giving his patience prescriptions
for Adderall, Xanax or methadone, among others, even though they were not needed.
Methadone, a substance that is used to reduce withdrawal symptoms in heroin
addiction, is a very dangerous drug, which if not properly taken, can lead to
addiction.
The doctor was a well seen member of his community and there
has been no suspicion about the way he practiced medicine until the Chris
Benoit case. It was found that Dr. Phil Astin had been prescribing the
professional wrestler a 10 months supply of steroids every three to four weeks.
This lasted for a year, from May 2006 to May 2007.
Chris Benoit was found dead in his house in the Atlanta area in June
2007. The wrestler first strangled his wife, then his boy and after placing
Bibles next to the two bodies he hanged himself on an exercise equipment. The
autopsy report stated that the level of testosterone that was found in Benoit’s
body was 10 times higher than the normal one.
There are suspicions that an increased level of testosterone
can lead to paranoia and violent outbursts, but no official study confirmed
this, and authorities were reluctant to the idea of linking Benoit’s killings
to the use of steroids.
Chris Benoit’s father thinks that was his son did was a
consequence of the many concussions he suffered in the ring. The autopsy report
also stated that Benoit’s brain suffered significant damage during his career.
