Chivas USA won 3-0 over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Thursday night to earn their first Super Clasico series victory which puts them atop the Western Conference leaving the Houston Dynamo on second place.
The first goal came in the 23rd minute of Razov’s boot, who outran the Galaxy defense after receiving a long and accurate pass from team mate Lawson Vaughn. The 33-year-old put it past goalkeeper Joe Cannon despite the tight angle from where he planted the shot that turned into his ninth goal of the season.
The Galaxy played well in the first half and were very near of scoring the tying goal in the 29th minute. But, Portuguese defender Abel Xavier's shot off the corner kick from Donovan went over the post.
The LA team had another great chance of scoring in the 33rd minute when a chest pass landed in front of Donovan, who found himself face-to-face with Brad Guzan. Chivas goaltender closed the angle and the goal before the rebound was cleared by the defense.
In the 88 minute Galaxy’s hopes of tying the score late in the game were crushed by Mendoza, who had been dangerous most of the match with several good looks on goal. He received a pass from Sacha Kljestan in the midfield, dribbled it into the box and put it past goalkeeper Cannon to record his second goal of the season.
In second half stoppage time the Galaxy botched a defensive clear, allowing Laurent Merlin to score through a powerful shot from the top of the penalty box.
Los Angeles will play their next match against defending champion Houston at the Home Depot Center on Sunday.
Its injured midfielder David Beckham told ESPN2 in a halftime interview: "I've got a chance of playing before the end of the season, but I don't want to give a time because who knows with injuries.
The rehab is going really well. I'm working twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. I'm doing everything possible to get myself fit before the end of the season."
